Great list. I agree with everything except the fries. And even though it's written for Pierre's daughter - it applies to all of us.

Is saying the right things really the best advice ? I often question the wisdom in saying such kind and considerate things. The real world is harsh and nasty and I wonder if teaching good things is the way to go. So many celebrities go to jail, but leave wealthier and more famous than they started, makes me wonder if the best advise base the these kind words you have posted.

I am 40 and in the process of going through a divorce. My parents have been there for me. My parents always told me "Act right work hard and good things will always happen to you"

These are lovely. I've just sent my first born off to college as well, but it's Red Sox territory.

My one line of advice to him: "Just do you, because that's pretty terrific."

having just sent my only daughter off to her first year of college this column hit home somewhat. dad never gave me any real sitdown either, and I've spent 18 years piling it on at every opportunity, including the letter I left with her in her dorm, except for the Mets - had to leave her with a brand new Yankees pennant to represent!

My parents didn't give advice but they did regularly give orders. Most of which I ignored.

My daddy had a way of making comments that stuck though. I remember being 17 and a new driver. We were going to IHOP for breakfast. I ran over the curb and blamed the curb for being in the way.

My daddy said, "life is gonna be tough if you go through it blaming other things for your mistakes." What a huge impact that statement had on me.

Thanks to him when I have a problem the first place I look is myself and how my actions played a role in my problem.

Funny how a trip to IHOP played a role in me learning to take responsibility.
