<description>I have to tell you, the best way to enjoy free (idle) time is after long, hard, healthy work.

Kids don&#039;t do much now a days because, really, we as parents don&#039;t do much. Oh, don&#039;t get your panties in a bunch. We&#039;re busy alright, but it&#039;s an odd sort of &quot;busy&quot;.

We (parents) have also been conditioned to think that we have to keep our children busy in that odd way as well, like with camps, social activities, sports and such.

I&#039;m not saying that there&#039;s anything wrong with camps, social activities or sports, it&#039;s just that those are actually IDLE time! Really! Those are the things you do with &quot;free&quot; time!

Nothing beats good work - working outside, working with your hands, working for and with your family. We were meant to work, just as the ant.

Even young children can and should put in a good day&#039;s work. Even if that &quot;day&#039;s work&quot; constitutes an hour of pulling weeds in the garden or &quot;folding&quot; laundry.

If we haven&#039;t established this ethic in a child while they&#039;re young, we may run into a problem if we should even hint around to the fact that our teenager should mow the lawn! LOL

They&#039;re used to doing nothing - and laziness is a hard habit to break (or even admit to being).

I say, put them to work. Build that tool shed, remodel the kitchen, make your yard like the cover of Home and Gardens, change the plumbing over to pvc... you get the idea.

Working (especially as a family) is great for the feeling of accomplishment as well as exercise both mentally and physically.

After all is said and done, a week at camp, or a game of baseball will be enjoyed more than it ever has before.
